"Einmal ist keinmal, said Tomas to himself. What happens but once, says the German adage, might as well not have happened at all. If we have only one life to live, we might as well not have lived at all."
Milan Kundera
The Unbearable Lightness of Being
As I looked toward the west, the Sun was shining with unusual intensity. However, in the east, far off in the distance, the clouds formed an opaque blackness that grew threateningly; in the vortex of the horizon, dark mushrooms swirled.
Soon the storm advanced, like ink spreading across a canvas. Night erupted in the skies. The Sun was drowned amidst terrible thunderclaps, so powerful that vehicles emitted their electronic screams like frightened little creatures.
The overcast sky suddenly parted, and as if an invisible knife had slashed open the sky's belly, the waters poured down violently and unpleasantly. As if we were witnessing a cosmic murder, the water, like blood, soaked everything and everyone.
In the chaos, I ran in search of shelter, but it was too late. The water was rising at an alarming rate. Fire, mud, and debris in the gray landscape were all that could be seen through the curtain of water cascading from above.
Finally, it covered everything... destroyed everything... cleaned everything...
I suppose the next day, the Sun rose to view a clear, blue sea and once again saw that everything was right.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being
